Breakdown cover: everything you need to know

Car Insurance from just £125 per year

At Sterling, our breakdown cover is slightly different to other offerings out there. We often get queries from amazed customers about our breakdown insurance, which is why we’ve put together the answers to some of your most pressing questions. Find out more about what Sterling’s breakdown cover is, what you should do if you breakdown and more in this blog!

What is breakdown cover?

Breakdown covers insures you in the event that your car breaks down. This could be from something as small as your tyre getting a puncture or something as big as your battery going dead. Taking out breakdown cover helps ensure that you aren’t left stranded should the worst happen – or left with a large bill.

At Sterling, we offer a car breakdown service for a wide range of situations. Whether you need classic car breakdown cover, commercial vehicle breakdown insurance, national breakdown cover or European breakdown cover, give us a call on  0344 381 9990 to find out more.

Plus, when your breakdown cover is purchased alongside a car insurance policy, we offer discounts on your breakdown insurance policy, which will help save you money upfront.

What’s included in Sterling breakdown cover?

Sterling breakdown insurance includes the following:

  • Roadside assistance and onward journey
  • National recovery service
  • Home service

You can also opt for extras such as:

  • European breakdown cover
  • Key cover
  • Misfuelling cover

Roadside assistance, home breakdowns and onward journey

Whether you’ve tried to set off on a journey from home and your car won’t start or your car breaks down in the middle of an outing, we offer 24/7 roadside recovery assistance. Even if your vehicle can’t be fixed at the scene, we’ll take your car to the nearest approved garage for repairs. We’ll even transport you and up to five passengers to a place of your choice.

European breakdown cover

When you’re travelling in a different country and don’t speak the language, it’s often ten times more difficult to get help on the spot if you’ve broken down. But if you take out additional breakdown cover with us, all you need to do is give us a call. As long as you’re travelling in one of our approved countries, we’ll help you get back on the road again.

Not only do we offer cover in most European countries, but we also provide breakdown assistance in countries outside the EU too. Take a look at our European breakdown cover page to find out which countries we cover.

Key and misfuelling cover

Over a quarter of drivers have misplaced their keys at some point or another. This makes key cover a great optional extra – after all, you never know you’ll need it until you need it!

Likewise, putting the wrong fuel in your car can damage the vehicle and put you in danger. If you have added misfuelling cover to your policy, you can give us a ring and a recovery specialist will come to you and drain the fuel for you.

Why should you get breakdown cover?

No matter what kind of vehicle you own, there’s nothing worse than getting stranded in the middle of nowhere. This is often the case if you don’t have the right breakdown cover. Thankfully, as we work with over 850 local garages in the UK alone, we help ensure you get the help you need as soon as possible.

Older or classic cars

You might feel like classic car breakdown cover or car breakdown insurance for older cars is just another expense you don’t need. But if you own an older or classic car, you might find that your car breaks down more frequently, which makes car breakdown insurance a must. It also means that breakdown cover is usually more economical.

We even offer European breakdown cover for older and Classic cars – perfect for those unforgettable trips abroad in your classic.

Commercial vehicles

If you own a commercial vehicle or you use your car for business, there’s nothing worse than breaking down when you’re working, especially if you’re on a tight deadline. As a result, commercial vehicle breakdown insurance is a must as it helps ensure your vehicle is fixed as quickly as possible.

Does breakdown insurance cover the person or car?

Our policy covers your car, but this doesn’t mean we’ll leave you stranded while your car is getting fixed. If your car or van can’t be repaired at the scene of the breakdown, we’ll take your vehicle, you and up to five passengers to a place of your choice.

We also offer breakdown cover for multiple cars – let us know if you’d like to get insurance on different vehicles and we should be able to help.

What do I do if my car breaks down?

If you’ve already taken breakdown cover out with us, simply give us a call on 0330 123 1146. The Sterling Rescue breakdown line operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

How do I know if I have breakdown cover?

It’s always best to check your emails or insurance documents to see if you already have breakdown cover. You can do this through Sterling by logging in and viewing all your documents and policy information.

If you’re not sure who your insurance provider is, you can simply search your emails by typing ‘breakdown’ into the email search bar. Or if you know who your provider is but you’re not sure if your breakdown cover policy is still active, you can call your insurance broker and ask them to check the status of your cover.

Does travel insurance cover car breakdown?

No. If you want to travel abroad in your car, we offer breakdown cover for countries in Europe, as well as countries further afield if you’re looking for an adventure.

Does car insurance cover breakdowns?

Most standard car insurance policies don’t include breakdown repairs, but you can add our breakdown cover to your insurance policy. Our prices for this start from £46.80.

What is the excess on car breakdown cover?

There isn’t an excess on Sterling Rescue breakdown cover. You’ll only need to pay for additional services if they aren’t covered on your current level of cover.

What does onward journey mean in breakdown cover?

Onward journey, or onward travel, helps ensure that even if your car needs to be taken to the garage, you won’t be stranded. It ensures you and other passengers reach the destination of your choice.

What is national breakdown cover?

This is when your policy includes national recovery. Following a breakdown that cannot be repaired at the roadside, national recovery allows you to choose where you’d like your vehicle to be towed. This can be a destination of your choice.

What happens if you don’t have breakdown cover?

This usually results in higher costs, which we have broken down in our blog on the true cost of not having breakdown cover. Getting in contact with a local garage if you’re away from home can also be quite difficult and stressful, particularly if it’s late at night, over the weekend, or on a bank holiday. It’s also worth having a power bank in the car in case your phone battery goes flat.

Breakdown cover gives you peace of mind, and helps reduce the stress and costs involved with recovering your vehicle.

Should I get breakdown cover with insurance?

Getting breakdown cover with your insurance is usually the cheapest option when you choose to insure your vehicle with us. Whether you have multiple cars or you need car insurance that includes breakdown cover in the UK or Europe, we can help.
