Car insurance policies putting students first
Affordable car insurance for students can be hard to come by, but we don’t think that should be the case. That’s why we offer student car insurance policies for young drivers who use their car on campus at university, college or when they’re back home during the holidays.
There are already so many expensive costs associated with attending higher education, but we’re intent on trying to keep car insurance for students to a minimum.
We offer cover with, and without, a black box, with university students and young drivers in mind. And unlike other black boxes policies we don’t give you a curfew. The savings you make, can be spent on enjoying student life.

Curfew-free black box policies
Just because you’re at uni, it doesn’t mean you should be restricted by what time of day you wish to drive. As long as you are in a fit state and can legally drive, we don’t agree with punishing you for wanting to travel home on a Friday night after you’ve finished your studies for the week.
Our policies remove the curfew that is often in many black box insurance deals and we also offer an emergency feature too in case you need to contact the emergency services in the event of an accident.
Flexible policies based on your needs
Our team of UK-based experts are on hand to help you get a policy that’s right for you and your needs. We can be flexible with what we offer; whether that’s a policy with or without a black box, a mileage limit or if you want to pay your insurance annually.
Legal protection up to ÂŁ100,000 included
We offer legal cover as a standard feature in our student car insurance policies for UK residents to help put your mind at rest if ever you’re involved in an accident that is not your fault. It can help you recover any out of pocket expenses afterwards and possibly look to offer a hire vehicle as well as other benefits.
Monthly payments and annual policy payment plans
As a younger driver it’s a certain probability that your policy may be higher than the average car insurance. That’s why Sterling can set up monthly payment plans to help you pay your insurance along with your monthly student bills.
Alternatively, we also allow you to pay an annual fee, which is generally cheaper than monthly payments, if you can afford it.
Frequently asked questions
Is student car insurance a necessity?
Car insurance is not an option, it’s a must. If you already have an insurance policy in place, you won’t need to take out specialised student car cover, but you will need to tell your insurer about any changes to your address and occupation.
If you have just passed your driving test before you head off to uni, then taking out this cover is an ideal first policy.
Why is car insurance more expensive for younger drivers?
Insurance is typically more expensive for younger drivers because there are statistically more accidents involving this age bracket. This makes them harder to insure, as insurers are having to take into account the extra risks associated with them.
How to get cheaper car insurance for student drivers
Money can be tight, especially for a student, but don’t fret, there are a few ways in which you can reduce the amount you pay for a car insurance policy.
- You can take out black box insurance, which is a great way to show your insurer you drive safely and at the correct speed
- You can pass extra qualifications such as PassPlus and RoSPA
- Add extra security measures to your vehicle such as a dash cam and/or tracker
- Opt for a car that is cheaper to insure by choosing one with a smaller engine and is in a lower insurance group
- Add a mile limiter, this will make it cheaper as you will only be driving for a set amount of miles per year
- Increase your excess. This will mean you will need to pay out more money in the event of a claim, but can reduce your monthly or annual costs. It’s worth noting you will always need to pay this in the event you make a claim, so don’t be unrealistic with how much you set it by
What insurance type will I need as a student driver?
Like any driver on the road, there are a few different types of cover you can choose from:
- Student car insurance – this type of cover is designed only for students and will cover you during and outside of term time
- Fully comprehensive – this is the highest level of cover, but despite this it can sometimes be the cheapest. It will cover you and your vehicle along with third parties, their property and their vehicle
- Third party, fire and theft – you will be covered for damage to other people and their property and cars, along with your vehicle in the event it gets damaged by fire or is stolen
- Third party only – this is the minimum coverage you can buy and will only cover damage to other people, their property or their car in the event you need to make a claim
- Black box insurance – a black box (or telematics box) will be fitted into your car and will monitor how you drive for both speed and safety. The data will then be given to your insurer who can use this to determine how safe you are on the road and can offer a cheaper premium the following year if you are considered a good driver. Be aware that bad driving will drive the price up.
Which age does car insurance become cheaper?
Your car insurance should get cheaper each year, but you will notice a sizeable reduction in the cost as soon as you hit 21 years of age and have a clean driving record. The price should continue to go down each year and when you hit 25, it will drop even more should you still have a clean record.
