Do I need separate insurance for my horse trailer?
Horse trailer insurance is a no-brainer if you ever transport horses. It is not legal liability insurance for your horse, but it will protect your horse trailer and the animals in the event of an accident.
Most comprehensive car and van insurance policies only cover horsebox trailers for third party liability.
It means you would be covered for any injury to a third party or damage to their property, but not if the horse trailer was damaged in an accident that was your fault. Third party cover also excludes theft and fire damage.
Horse trailer insurance will give you peace of mind. Call Sterling direct as our best prices are often available over the phone.

- Horse owners who want to take their mounts to Europe for a holiday or event.
Can I get breakdown cover for my horse trailer?
Sterling horsebox policies cover all eventualities – there’s even cover for horses in transit.
If your trailer or horsebox breaks down a team of specialists will come to the rescue with a top of the range horsebox to recover your horses.
In certain circumstances they will close the road you are stranded on, or lanes on a motorway, cordon off a safe haven, and pacify and protect your horses.
They will then recover the trailer or horsebox and horses and transport them to either your destination or your home.
Cover insures the recovery of the horsebox trailer and up to three horses (it will not recover your tow vehicle).
Where can I find cheap horse trailer insurance?
The trailer insurance specialists at Sterling are champing at the bit to find the best horse trailer insurance deal for you.
Sterling can also cover garden trailers, builders’ trailers, trailer tents, boat trailers, flatbed trailers, luggage trailers and teardrop trailers.
Whether your horse trailer is only used occasionally or is regularly on the road, Sterling has cover to protect you and your property.
Are there any horsebox trailer safety guidelines that I need to know?
- The weight of your horsebox trailer and contents must be within the vehicle’s towing ability and not more than 85% of the car’s kerbside weight if the horsebox trailer has brakes – 50% if it hasn’t. (Depending on when you passed your driving test the towing allowance may differ. Check for the latest Department for Transport advice.)
- Maximum horsebox trailer width in the UK and EU is 2.55m.
- Indicators, lights and brakes (where fitted) must work and the horsebox trailer must display the same number plate as the towing vehicle.
- Horsebox trailer speed limits on UK roads are 60mph for motorways and dual carriageways and 50mph on single carriageway roads. Horsebox trailers cannot use the outside lane of a motorway.
