You will need a provisional driving licence to arrange your driving theory test. Read our blog to find out how to get a provisional licence in Northern Ireland

You can book your theory test online at the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) for Northern Ireland website.

Applicants need to create an account, provide personal details and select their preferred test centre and time slot.

Upon successful registration, applicants receive a confirmation email containing details such as the test date, time, and location. It’s crucial to keep this confirmation safe, as it serves as proof of booking and includes instructions for the test day.

How much does the theory test cost?

The fee to take a theory driving test for a car or motorcycle is £23, which must be paid at the time of booking.

Rescheduling and cancelling the test

Circumstances may arise, making a change in your theory test appointment necessary. Applicants can reschedule or cancel their theory driving test online at the same website that they booked it.

However, it’s important to note there may be limitations regarding how close to the test date that changes can be made, as well as potential fees associated with late cancellations or rescheduling. It’s advisable to plan ahead and make any necessary adjustments as early as possible to avoid inconvenience and additional costs.

Pass mark requirements

The theory driving test evaluates candidates’ knowledge of the rules of the road, traffic signs, and general driving principles.

The pass mark for the theory driving test in Northern Ireland stands at 43 out of 50. This means that candidates must answer at least 43 questions correctly out of the total 50 they will be presented with.

Achieving this score demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of road safety regulations and is essential for roadworthy driving.

Northern Ireland vs. UK mock tests

While the theory driving test shares fundamental principles across the United Kingdom, there may be nuances specific to Northern Ireland.

While UK mock tests can provide valuable practice and insight into general driving principles, it’s crucial for Northern Ireland residents to supplement this with region-specific resources.

In Northern Ireland, for example, there is less than 100 miles of motorway – compared to 3,000+ in the rest of the UK – so questions about motorway driving are rarely asked. Nonetheless, learners must be aware of motorway driving rules, regulations and restrictions.

The best place to look for theory test practice is the NI Direct website, but your driving instructor can also coach you for your theory test during your lessons.

Once you have passed your theory test you will be itching to take the practical test. Before you do, read our blog detailing everything you need to know before taking your driving test in Northern Ireland and find out the areas most affected by the driving test backlog
