You probably remember that ‘I can go everywhere now’ feeling once you finally got your driving licence. It’s hard to match that excitement, but going on a road trip abroad comes pretty close. However, if you are planning a trip overseas where you’ll need to drive, you may realise that you actually can’t go everywhere on just a UK licence.
This is where being in the know will come in handy, so your holiday plans aren’t spoiled.
In this blog, we’re taking a look at where you can drive abroad with a UK licence and what to do if you can’t.
Where can you drive with just your UK driving licence?
It’s important to remember that wherever you’re heading off to, if you’re driving, your UK driving licence should be on your list of things to bring with you. It’s essential for driving abroad.
This will obviously prove that you have passed your driving test in this country and, in many countries around Europe, will be enough to legally drive there.

According to the government website, if you have a photocard driving licence issued in the UK, you shouldn’t have any issues driving in most of the EU, as well as Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
In countries further afield, such as Canada and the USA, you can legally drive with just your licence, but there are a few caveats. You can drive for up to three months in America, but some car rental companies may require you to have an international driving permit (IDP), and it is preferable in certain states to have one, so make sure you check. Canada is similar, but you can drive there with just your licence for up to six months. You’ll also have to be over 21 to rent a car in both countries, so that’s something to bear in mind too.
Where do you need an IDP to drive?
This is subject to change, but currently, you will need an IDP to drive in most Latin American countries, including Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. You will also need one if you’re planning to drive in the majority of Asia or Africa.
Looking to visit popular tourist destinations like Turkey, Australia, Egypt, Jamaica and New Zealand? You’ve guessed it, they’ll require you to have an IDP too.
There’s also quite a few countries in Europe that will require (or at least recommend you have) some form of IDP to drive there. This includes:
- Austria
- Belarus
- Greece
- Hungary
- Italy
Multiple countries in the Balkans, like Bulgaria and Montenegro, will also need you to carry an IDP alongside your UK licence.
As rules change over time, so will these requirements, so it’s always best to check with the local embassy of where you plan to visit. We also recommend checking with the rental company you may use if you’re not driving your own car, as they might have their own requirements.

Will you need any other documents to drive in another country?
Each country will have its own specific essentials for driving on its roads, so it is best to do your research beforehand, especially as things are subject to change.
For example, to drive in countries like Spain and France, you will need to keep your passport, V5C logbook, and insurance certificate alongside your licence with you.
Give yourself enough time to get what you need sorted, but don’t check too far in advance in case the rules are amended.
Driving rules in Europe may have changed since this article was published in May 2026. Please check official government sources before travelling.
