Sterling Cup golf event returns to raise another £12k to help fight cancer

Our second staging of the Sterling Cup charity golf competition was even bigger and better than the first. As this blog explains, a hole lot of fun was had!

Car Insurance from just £125 per year

Players from across the insurance industry came together for a second time to support those battling cancer by competing in our charity golf competition.

The Sterling Cup returned after a hugely successful and enjoyable inaugural staging in 2021, and this year it was even bigger and better! Sixty-eight players joined the feast of golfing fun at the Manor of Groves course in Hertfordshire, with a whopping £12,000 being raised for good causes in the process.

That’s now £22,000 donated to help the fight against cancer as a result of the popular event being organised by Sterling Insurance.

More support for brave Archie Wilks who has beaten cancer

Last year’s fundraising efforts were all donated to help get little Archie Wilks to America for further specialist care to improve his chances of beating neuroblastoma. His dad Simon works for us and we were so happy to help him and his family once more in 2022.

There was cause for celebration this time around though as participants discovered that the brave six-year-old is now in full remission after 42 months of cancer treatment. The Wilks are currently in America for pioneering gene treatment to help reduce the chances of the disease returning.

Money raised from the second Sterling Cup will be split between UK cancer charities as well as helping to fund further treatment for Archie across the Atlantic.

Who were the winners of the 2022 Sterling Cup?

Paul Copeland’s ‘Team Copes’ exacted revenge on Rod Wellard’s ‘Team Wellard’ by securing an 18-point win to taste glory in the Ryder Cup-style event at Hertfordshire’s Manor of Groves course.

Thomas French-Dent and Dan Snowsill landed 50 points to be crowned the best pair on the day, just pipping John Crabb and Nick Parmenter (49) and the duo of Dan Woods and Stuart Crosby (48) to number one spot.

Peter Cook, a manager at Sterling Insurance, said: “We are super grateful to all the supporters, sponsors and participants of this year’s Sterling Cup for making the day such a success.

“The weather held off and we had a packed club house of nearly 70 golfers who had travelled up and down the country to be part of a special day. After the inaugural event was won last year by Team Wellard, it was pleasing that Team Copes had his revenge and levelled the event to one apiece.

“With over £20,000 being raised towards helping the fight against cancer, we are pleased to announce that both captains will return on September 14, 2023 to battle it out once again for the Sterling Cup and we look forward to continuing our fundraising efforts.”

Peter also thanked Intelligent Vehicle Services (gold sponsorship), Strategic Insurance Services (silver) and Auxillis (bronze) for their sponsorship of the Sterling Cup 2022.
