The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidirect.gov.uk\/services\/book-your-theory-test-online\">easiest way to book your theory test is through NIDirect<\/a>, but if you cannot apply online you can also do so over the phone \u2013 the number is 0345 600 6700. In order to apply, you\u2019ll need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/northern-ireland\/blog\/learner-drivers\/getting-a-provisional-licence\/\">A valid UK provisional driving licence<\/a> registered at an address in Northern Ireland<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A valid card for payment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A valid email address to confirm the booking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s still mandatory to wear a face mask to your theory test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also get extra support for your theory test if required, such as extra time or a voiceover (with headphones provided). Reasons you might require extra support can include difficulty reading or a disability. You can find out more about additional support when you book your theory test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-much-is-a-theory-test\">How much is a theory test?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking your theory test for a car is currently \u00a323. Alternatively, you can call 0300 200 7862 to book. Test slots are released five months in advance, and some test centres might fill up more quickly than others, so it\u2019s sometimes worth checking other centres if you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/northern-ireland\/blog\/learner-drivers\/driving-test-backlog\/\">struggling to book a slot at your chosen test centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To apply, you\u2019ll need the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Driving licence number<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Debit or credit card for payment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Valid email address<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll also likely need your theory test certificate to hand, and you\u2019ll usually need to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/northern-ireland\/blog\/insurance\/republic-of-ireland-insurance\/\">Northern Ireland resident r<\/a>egistered at an NI address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-much-is-the-practical-test\">How much is the practical test?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practical driving test is \u00a345.50 on a weekday and \u00a362.50 for an evening or weekend slot. If you\u2019re thinking of taking a test for a different type of vehicle, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidirect.gov.uk\/articles\/driving-test-fees\">find a full list of fees on the NIDirect website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-to-expect-on-the-day-of-your-driving-test\">What to expect on the day of your driving test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/driving-tests-ni-4-1024x731.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-857\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/driving-tests-ni-4-1024x731.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/driving-tests-ni-4-300x214.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/driving-tests-ni-4-768x549.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/driving-tests-ni-4.webp 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you\u2019ve reached the test centre on the day of your test, you\u2019ll need to bring your driving licence, your theory test pass certificate, your registration book, and an MOT disc if necessary. Your examiner will check through your paperwork and ask if you\u2019d like someone to accompany you in the car during your test. This could be a family member, friend, or your instructor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once complete, you\u2019ll need to perform an eyesight test and answer some safety questions \u2013 i.e. the show me, tell me questions \u2013 before starting the driving portion of your test, which usually lasts around 40 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-checking-your-eyesight\">Checking your eyesight<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll need to complete an eyesight test before you drive. Remember that if you fail this, you won\u2019t be able to continue with your test, so it\u2019s important that you wear any prescription glasses or contacts that you need to drive safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The examiner will ask you to read the number plate of a stationary car at a distance of approximately 20 to 20.5 metres away, depending on the size of the text on the number plate. You will get three chances to complete this part of the text so don\u2019t panic if you\u2019re not immediately able to read the numbers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-show-me-tell-me-questions\">Show me, tell me questions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll be asked one \u201cshow me\u201d question and one \u201ctell me\u201d question before you start driving. These help the examiner understand whether you can carry out basic safety checks on the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the \u201cshow me\u201d questions, you\u2019ll need to show the examiner how to perform a specific safety check, and for the \u201ctell me\u201d questions, you can simply tell the examiner how you would perform the check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you answer one or both of the questions incorrectly, you\u2019ll be given one driving fault. It\u2019s a good idea to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/car-show-me-tell-me-vehicle-safety-questions\/car-show-me-tell-me-vehicle-safety-questions\">study the show me, tell me questions before your test<\/a>. If you have a willing family member or friend, you could also run through the questions, performing the safety checks required for the \u201cshow me\u201d questions to gain a better understanding of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-driving-part-of-your-test\">The driving part of your test<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/driving-tests-ni-5-1024x731.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-858\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/driving-tests-ni-5-1024x731.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/driving-tests-ni-5-300x214.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/driving-tests-ni-5-768x549.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/driving-tests-ni-5.webp 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that the initial checks are out of the way, you\u2019ll be able to get in the car and start the driving portion of the test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like your driving lessons, you\u2019ll need to follow the examiner\u2019s directions so they can see how you drive on a wide range of roads and in different traffic conditions. Make sure to put everything you learned in your lessons to good practise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the test, you\u2019ll also be asked to perform one of the manoeuvres you\u2019ve learned, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reversing around a corner<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Making a U-turn<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reverse parking into a bay or on a road<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-independent-driving\">Independent driving<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll also be asked to drive around independently without directions from your examiner. The examiner will either give you a set of directions beforehand and show you a diagram of the route, or ask you to follow the traffic signs to a specific location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-many-minors-can-you-get\">How many minors can you get?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While taking the test, you can make up to 15 minors \u2013 anything above this will result in failing the test. This includes any minors you got from answering the show me, tell me questions incorrectly. Note that if you commit a major \u2013 i.e. a serious or dangerous driving fault \u2013 you\u2019ll fail the test and you might be asked to stop driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-after-your-test\">After your test<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you\u2019ve completed your test, your examiner will give you feedback on how you did and if you\u2019ve passed or failed. Whatever the result, it\u2019s a good idea for you and your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/northern-ireland\/blog\/learner-drivers\/booking-ni-theory-driving-test\/\"> driving instructor<\/a> to listen closely to the feedback so you know of any areas you need to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congratulations or commiserations!
