But if you\u2019re planning on driving in the ROI for the first time, you might wonder if you need to take out additional cover beforehand. In this blog, we tell you everything you need to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-driving-in-the-republic-of-ireland\">Driving in the Republic of Ireland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following Brexit, driving in the Republic of Ireland is no longer as easy as it once was. Although your regular car insurance could still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/northern-ireland\/blog\/insurance\/republic-of-ireland-insurance\/\">cover you to drive in \u00c9ire<\/a>, you might want to check your policy or talk to your insurance provider to make sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-will-i-need-anything-else-when-i-travel\">Will I need anything else when I travel?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sterling-insurance.co.uk\/northern-ireland\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/car-insurance-republic-ireland-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-697\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a number of other documents that you\u2019ll need to take with you. This includes the following.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-uk-or-northern-ireland-driving-licence\">UK or Northern Ireland driving licence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike other EU countries, you won\u2019t need an international driving licence when you travel to the Republic of Ireland. However, you will need to take your valid driving licence with you. Either a UK driving licence or a Northern Ireland driving licence are acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-valid-passport\">Valid passport<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When travelling in the Republic of Ireland and other countries within the European Union, you\u2019ll need to carry a valid passport with you. You will be eligible for state healthcare when you travel, but you\u2019ll need one of the following to use this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/using-the-nhs\/healthcare-abroad\/apply-for-a-free-uk-global-health-insurance-card-ghic\/\">UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Travel insurance with healthcare cover<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note that you can use an EHIC until it expires but will then need to apply for a GHIC afterwards.
