Here we examine which vehicles are affected, how to apply for an MOT exemption and the costs involved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-old-does-a-car-have-to-be-to-be-mot-exempt\">How old does a car have to be to be MOT exempt?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ST055c-MOT-Exemption-in-NI-2026-01-1024x559.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ST055c-MOT-Exemption-in-NI-2026-01-1024x559.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ST055c-MOT-Exemption-in-NI-2026-01-300x164.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ST055c-MOT-Exemption-in-NI-2026-01-768x419.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ST055c-MOT-Exemption-in-NI-2026-01-1536x838.webp 1536w, https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/northern-ireland\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ST055c-MOT-Exemption-in-NI-2026-01.webp 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Northern Ireland\u2019s former Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon announced in 2020 that any vehicle over 40-years-old is now considered a classic car, meaning they are free from getting an annual MOT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The change means that any private vehicles that were constructed or first registered more than 40 years ago are free from paying each year to have their car checked over each year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mallon said at the time: \u201cAfter carefully considering the results of a public consultation and listening to the views of elected representatives in our community with a keen interest in vehicles of historic interest, my plans to bring forward legislation to exempt private vehicles of historic interest from annual MOT testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am delighted to announce that the necessary legislative process has now been completed and the new legislation comes into effect. This will be welcome news for all<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/northern-ireland\/blog\/classic-cars\/e5-e10-petrol-classic-cars\/\"> owners of classic cars<\/a> and other eligible vehicles qualifying for this exemption. For classic cars, this is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/declaration-of-exemption-from-mot\">V112 form<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will allow you to drive the vehicle legally, as long as it is in roadworthy condition, is taxed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/northern-ireland\/classic-car-insurance\/\">insured<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are unsure as to when your vehicle was registered, you can check your vehicle\u2019s registration logbook, also known as V5C, to see if your car qualifies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-type-of-car-is-covered-by-the-40-year-mot-exemption-regulations\">What type of car is covered by the 40-year MOT exemption regulations?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The change means all manner of era-defining models have become legally fit for the road without an up to date MOT, including an Austin Montego, a Vauxhall Astra (MkII), a Mercedes Benz E-Class (W124), a SEAT Ibiza and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-if-my-car-has-only-recently-reached-40-years\">What if my car has only recently reached 40 years?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 40-year MOT exemption is a rolling law \u2013 it applies at the time your car reaches 40, whenever that happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-important-maintenance-checks-for-mot-exempt-vehicles\">Important maintenance checks for MOT exempt vehicles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite your vehicle being covered by the new 40-year MOT exemption law, we still recommend you carry out regular and thorough checks to ensure its roadworthiness.
