This is following the government\u2019s social-distancing guidelines in light of the coronavirus outbreak. But what should and can you do as a learner driver now that tests are on hold? Find out all this and more here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-update-what-are-the-dvsa-s-new-guidelines-for-the-second-lockdown\">Update: What are the DVSA\u2019s new guidelines for the second lockdown?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The DVSA has:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Suspended theory tests from 5th November to 2nd December<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suspended driving tests from 5th November to 2nd December<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This applies to all learner drivers. Whilst the first lockdown exempted critical workers in a number of sectors, they have yet to release any information regarding whether key workers will be exempt in the second lockdown. The first lockdown exempted critical workers in the following sectors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>health and social care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>education and childcare<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>key public services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>local and national government<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>food and other necessary goods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>public safety and national security<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>transport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>utilities, communication and financial services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The DVSA and the government have not yet released a statement on whether driving lessons will have to be stopped, but many driving schools are cancelling lessons during this period. We will update this page as soon as there is more official news on this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-m-not-a-critical-worker-what-do-i-need-to-do\">I\u2019m not a critical worker \u2013 what do I need to do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The process you need to follow will depend on which type of test you booked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-theory-test\">Theory test<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be notified via email that your theory test has been cancelled. You will also receive a refund, though please note that this could take a few weeks to clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll have to manually book another theory test for any date and time after the 2nd December 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-theory-test-is-already-booked-in-for-after-the-2nd-december-do-i-need-to-do-anything\">My theory test is already booked in for after the 2nd December \u2013 do I need to do anything?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>No, you won\u2019t need to do anything. You can still change or cancel your test if you would prefer a refund for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-practical-test\">Practical test<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst the DVSA were previously rebooking tests automatically following a cancellation as a result of the first lockdown, they have since issued a statement that learners wanting to take their practical test will have to rebook it themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-i-cancel-my-practical-test\">Can I cancel my practical test?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, get in touch with the DVSA <a href=\"mailto:customerservices@dvsa.gov.uk\">via email<\/a> to cancel your test. To get this sorted in a timely manner, please include your full name and two of the following bits of information in your email:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>your driving licence number<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your theory test pass certificate number<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your driving test booking reference<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your refund will then be processed. Please note that this could take a few weeks to clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-driving-instructor-booked-my-practical-test-for-me-what-happens-now\">My driving instructor booked my practical test for me. What happens now?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>At the moment, the DVSA has stated that they will be in touch with those affected by the new test suspensions. It\u2019d be best to get in touch with your driving instructor for more information close to your original test date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-theory-test-certificate-is-due-to-expire-before-i-ll-be-able-to-take-my-practical-what-can-i-do\">My theory test certificate is due to expire before I\u2019ll be able to take my practical. What can I do?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, your theory test certificate can\u2019t be extended in any circumstances. You\u2019ll have to book and pay for another theory test, which you\u2019ll have to pass before you can book your driving test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-want-to-book-a-driving-test-can-i\">I want to book a driving test. Can I?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven\u2019t already booked one, you can do so for tests up to 18 weeks in advance. Stay up to date on the changing situation by using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/coronavirus-covid-19-driving-tests-and-theory-tests\">this page<\/a> for the latest information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once everything is back up and running, learners who\u2019ve had their test postponed will have priority over anyone wanting to book a test. That means you might have to wait for a test longer than usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-should-i-do-about-my-learner-driver-car-insurance-do-i-need-it\">What should I do about my learner driver car insurance? Do I need it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you still want to use your learner driver licence to keep your skills fresh while popping to the shops or park (where restrictions allow), you\u2019ll still need a valid learner driver insurance policy. However, if you end up getting into an accident or damaging their vehicle, they could lose their no claims bonus. It\u2019s usually recommended that you instead take out a learner-driver-specific policy in your own name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more, if you need to insure your own vehicle, you should make sure you insure it in your own name with you as the main user. If you have a policy in your parent\u2019s name with them as the main user when this is not the case, this is known as \u2018fronting\u2019, which is a serious offence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-can-i-do-while-i-wait\">What can I do while I wait?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are plenty of ways you can keep your skills fresh. Consider the following to make the best of the coronavirus situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-revise-for-your-theory-test\">Revise for your theory test<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sterling-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2020\/03\/revise-for-your-theory-tests-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3532\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The best thing you can do to keep skills fresh is to revise for your theory and practical tests<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you have more time before your test, you can revise some more. Brush up on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/the-highway-code\">Highway Code<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/519129\/know-your-traffic-signs.pdf\">traffic signs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safedrivingforlife.info\/shop\/official-dvsa-guide-driving-essential-skills\/\">driving skills<\/a>. Once you\u2019re feeling prepared, the government recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safedrivingforlife.info\/free-practice-tests\/practice-theory-test-for-car-drivers-1-of-2\/\">this<\/a> practice theory test for cars. There are also a number of hazard perception resources you can try on your computer or on a phone app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-make-good-use-of-your-daily-exercise-outside-to-walk-your-driving-test-area\">Make good use of your daily exercise outside to walk your driving test area<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Familiarising yourself with the test area where you\u2019ll take your test will help you anticipate any hazards that might arise while you\u2019re doing your practical. While you walk around, take note of any difficult junctions, busy roundabouts, or bus lane times of operation, plus any other aspects of driving that you struggle with when you have lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also perform the eyesight test while you\u2019re walking. Just focus on a car approximately 20 metres away and try to read its number plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that walking should be done safely, keeping a distance of 2m from other pedestrians. If your test is taking place in a congested town or you\u2019re miles away from the test area, we would not advise that you try this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-prepare-for-the-show-me-tell-me-questions-of-your-practical\">Prepare for the \u2018show me, tell me\u2019 questions of your practical<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now\u2019s a great time to focus on the often-overlooked \u2018show me, tell me\u2019 questions of the practical test. You can find the full list of questions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/car-show-me-tell-me-vehicle-safety-questions\/car-show-me-tell-me-vehicle-safety-questions\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a car in the garage, you could even go through the questions, using the vehicle for help. We wouldn\u2019t advise you actually sound the horn, though! Bonus points for roping a household member into your practise and getting them to ask you the questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-watch-videos-on-manoeuvres\">Watch videos on manoeuvres<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, understanding how best to perform a manoeuvre is easier if you watch someone else talk you through each step.
