Plan a short trip first<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If it\u2019s your first time to hire a campervan you probably won\u2019t really know what to expect. It\u2019s best not to plan a four week tour of the Scottish Highlands for your maiden campervan voyage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/campervan\/6-tips-for-planning-a-campervan-holiday-on-a-tight-budget\/\">Plan a little more modestly<\/a>, perhaps a long weekend away, and head for somewhere a little closer to home. You will travel more slowly in the camper than in your regular car so for your first trip out don\u2019t plan to travel more than a couple of hours from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019ll be about 100 miles if the traffic is kind to you and most people live within that sort of distance from an area of outstanding natural beauty, such as the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, Exmoor and Dartmoor in Devon, the Peak District in Derbyshire, The New Forest in Hampshire, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/campervan\/taking-a-campervan-caravan-to-glastonbury\/\">Glastonbury Festival<\/a>\u2026 the list goes on and on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-get-used-to-driving-a-campervan\">2. Get used to driving a campervan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Driving the campervan isn\u2019t like driving your day car. As explained above, you will make slower progress and acceleration will probably not be as responsive as in your regular car.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/campervan\/first-time-campervan-drivers\/\">drive a campervan for the first time<\/a> it\u2019s also worth remembering the vehicle will be both longer and taller than your car, so beware those low bridges and hanging branches you will come across in country lanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parking can also be a problem though most people find reversing an easy manoeuvre by virtue of the van being flat at the back window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-find-out-what-s-included-in-your-rental\">3. Find out what&#8217;s included in your rental<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Check what\u2019s being provided by the company you\u2019re renting from. The last thing you want to do is set out after you hire a campervan for the first time only to discover there are no cooking utensils or something else you were relying on is no longer being supplied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you collect the campervan you should be provided with a full inventory of everything you will find inside for you to use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-add-extra-space\">4. Add extra space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember campervans are not particularly roomy so, if the campervan sleeps four or even six, it might well be a bit of a squeeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider taking a tent or awning too, which will give you a little bit more space in which to unwind and store your holiday gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever vehicle you choose when you hire a campervan, be it a classic VW camper, a Mazda Bongo, Toyota Previa or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/campervan\/campervan-conversion-faqs\/\">self build camper conversion<\/a>, the designers make the best use of the space available meaning there are lots of fold outs and pop ups, but an overcrowded caravan will feel like it\u2019s shrinking i<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/campervan\/winter-campervan-ideas\/\">f the weather is inclement <\/a>and you are stuck indoors!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-take-time-packing-your-camper\">5. Take time packing your camper<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/campervan\/pack-campervan-guide\/\">Pack very carefully<\/a>. Try to reserve a pitch if you can<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you book a campervan site check to see if you have a reserved pitch. If you don\u2019t have a reserved pitch, you may find a great spot in which to settle only to find someone else has nabbed it later in the day when you have gone out to explore in the van.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-consider-taking-bikes-to-explore-the-area-too\">7. Consider taking bikes to explore the area too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Invest in a rack and take a couple of bikes on your trip.
