{"id":241,"date":"2021-06-08T12:14:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T11:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/?p=241"},"modified":"2026-05-27T11:38:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T10:38:21","slug":"guide-to-learner-plates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/blog\/learner\/guide-to-learner-plates\/","title":{"rendered":"L plates and P plates: what you need to know"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning to drive is one of life&#8217;s most thrilling experiences and whilst you may feel silly having L and P plates stuck to your vehicle it&#8217;s imperative you know when you should display them on your vehicle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-needs-an-l-plate\">Who needs an L plate?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every learner driver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/driving-lessons-learning-to-drive\/using-l-and-p-plates\">needs<\/a> to have L plates on their vehicle. If you\u2019re learning to drive with an instructor they would have sorted this out already, but if you\u2019re learning to drive from a family member then you must ensure you have two L plates on the car: one at the front and one at the back.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rules-for-displaying-l-plates\">Rules for displaying L plates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your L plates must not be defaced and must not fall off your car mid-drive. As such, drivers generally opt for either magnetic or adhesive L plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-l-plates-be-displayed-all-the-time\">Can L plates be displayed all the time?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re not a learner driver, then you should remove the L plates from your car. This also applies if you have a full UK licence, but share your car with a learner. Whilst you won\u2019t get into any serious trouble for leaving L plates on if you\u2019re fully qualified, it\u2019s best practice for yourself and other road users that you remove them before you set off on your journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, driving instructors are likely to keep their L plates on at all times, which, of course, is perfectly legal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-p-plate\">What is a P plate?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you\u2019ve recently passed your driving test, it\u2019s common to display two green P plates on your car. These help to signify that you\u2019re a new driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly, the P on a P plate doesn\u2019t stand for \u201cpass\u201d, but instead for \u201cprobationary\u201d. This doesn\u2019t mean there are restrictions on your driving ability. It simply lets other drivers know that you haven\u2019t had your licence for long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike L plates, which all learner drivers must display on their cars, P plates are not mandatory. This means you have the choice as to whether you use them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-use-p-plates\">Why use P plates?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As P plates aren\u2019t mandatory, you might be wondering why people choose to display them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Displaying a P plate is the only way to show other drivers that you\u2019re new to the road. This is important because, since you\u2019ll only recently have passed your test, you may not have driven around much alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since a P plate lets other drivers know you\u2019re new to driving alone, it also encourages them to give you a bit more leeway when it comes to making mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-get-learner-driver-insurance-from-55p-per-day\">Get learner driver insurance from 55p per day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cheap <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/learner-driver-insurance\/\">learner driver insurance<\/a> can be hard to find.
