{"id":217,"date":"2021-10-04T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-04T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/?p=217"},"modified":"2026-03-25T14:25:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T14:25:34","slug":"winter-driving-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/blog\/breakdown\/winter-driving-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"How to prepare your car for winter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Sterling Insurance, we usually receive about 50 breakdown calls a day in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/breakdown\/summer-car-breakdowns\/\">warmer weather<\/a>, but during periods of extremely bad weather, this has been known to rise to more than double that figure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ll be checking the Met Office\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/weather\/long-range-forecast\">long range weather forecast<\/a> to find out what to expect, but in the meantime, we\u2019ve come up with eight tips on how to prepare your car for winter, reduce the risk of a fail-to-start or breakdown, and help you stay safe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-faulty-tyres-are-a-major-cause-of-breakdown\">1. Faulty tyres are a major cause of breakdown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Problems with tyres are a major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/breakdown\/8-most-common-causes-of-breakdown-and-how-to-avoid-them\/\">cause of breakdown<\/a>. Check them all for tread depth and pressure \u2013 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/breakdown\/changing-a-tyre\/\">don\u2019t forget the spare<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not only snow that causes<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/standard\/drive-safely-clocks-gone-back\/\"> dangerous driving conditions<\/a>. Roads can be icy and especially greasy in the winter with the effects of mud, water and salt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check the tyre walls too for gouges and bulges, and the tread depth should be at least 3mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you live in an exposed or rural area, you might want to consider investing in a set of winter tyres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sterling-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2021\/09\/pexels-andrea-piacquadio-3806249-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24114\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Photo by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/@olly?utm_content=attributionCopyText&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=pexels\">Andrea Piacquadio<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/photo\/man-changing-a-car-tire-3806249\/?utm_content=attributionCopyText&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=pexels\">Pexels<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-top-up-your-antifreeze\">2. Top up your antifreeze<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check and top up or replace the antifreeze in the radiator. The job will only take a few minutes but it could save you hundreds of pounds in repairs should you freeze up and breakdown.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While you\u2019re at it, replenish the windscreen washer reservoir. You don\u2019t have to wait for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/breakdown\/dashboard-warning-lights\/\">warning light<\/a> to illuminate on your dashboard!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-make-sure-you-can-see\">3. Make sure you can see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roads get mucky in winter with mud and slush, which means windows can become smeared and lights covered in dirt. It takes seconds to run a rag over them before you set off but it could be a life saver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your window is iced up make sure you clear it thoroughly. Don\u2019t be the one driving along the road while peering through a letterbox-shaped clearing in the ice or snow-covered windscreen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your windows are misted on the inside, run the engine with the heater on until they clear. It is not only foolish and dangerous to drive if your vision is restricted, it is against the law too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The law states: &#8220;All glass or other transparent material fitted to a motor vehicle shall be maintained in such condition that it does not obscure the vision of the driver while the vehicle is being driven on a road.\u201d<br><br>If you were to be stopped by the Police or have an accident, as a result of having a dirty windscreen, then you could be fined and charged for careless driving. Punishments for careless driving range from an on-the-spot fine of \u00a3100 and three penalty points. However, if your case was to go to court then you could see that fine increase to \u00a35,000 and receive up to nine penalty points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sterling-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2021\/09\/lisa-pexels-1.jpg\" alt=\"breakdown\" class=\"wp-image-24115\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Photo by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/@fotios-photos\">Lisa<\/a> from Pexels.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-always-be-prepared-in-the-winter\">4. Always be prepared in the winter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The things you use to unfreeze your car in the morning should travel with you. Leaving the de-icer and ice scraper at home won\u2019t help you at 5pm when you discover your car is frozen solid again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And take that gear into your home or workplace with you as in periods of extreme weather you can get frozen out of your car. That\u2019s no good if your scraper and de-icer are locked inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-prevent-breakdown-by-booking-a-winter-service\">5. Prevent breakdown by booking a winter service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A winter service will pinpoint mechanical problems before they become serious issues and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/breakdown\/cost-not-having-breakdown-cover\/\">cost you a lot of money<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The winter service will concentrate on six main areas of care for your car:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tyre inspection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/campervan\/campervan-maintenance-tips\/\">Battery test<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coolant and antifreeze<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Windscreen wiper efficiency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lights check<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oil and other lubricants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-adjust-your-driving-technique\">6. Adjust your driving technique<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In extreme weather, your driving style needs to change. Stopping distances can be ten times greater in snow or ice. You should apply the brakes gently with no sudden movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pulling away from snowy or icy junctions may be easier in second gear and lower revs will help prevent wheel spin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your car does begin to slide, don&#8217;t panic \u2013 ease off the accelerator and steer into the direction the car is skidding. Keep your foot off the brake as this could lock them further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patience and common sense are vital when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/learner\/bad-weather-driving-advice\/\">driving in bad winter weather<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-stay-safe-in-the-event-of-a-breakdown\">7. Stay safe in the event of a breakdown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the worst comes to the worst and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/breakdown\/what-to-do-car-breaks-down\/\">you do breakdown<\/a>, ensure you and your passengers are in a safe place.
