Whether you\u2019re heading out on your daily drive to work, off shopping for groceries or planning a longer journey, a non-starter will probably leave you wondering who you should call and how much it will cost to put right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/breakdown-cover\/\">breakdown and recovery experts<\/a> at Sterling insurance explain the eight most common reasons that an engine fails to start and what you can do if it happens to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sterling-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Images-2-jump-start-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"car\" class=\"wp-image-31538\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-battery-problems\">1. Battery problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A defective battery is responsible for more non-starters than any other problem. When this happens, the car usually makes a rapid clicking sound when you turn the key but it won\u2019t start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"there-are-a-number-of-reasons-your-car-battery-can-lose-its-charge-or-completely-die\">There are a number of reasons your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/breakdown\/flat-car-battery\/\">car battery can lose its charge<\/a> or completely die:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When an electrical component such as the lights or radio are left on for an extended period<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the car has sat idle for a long period of time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the car has developed a fault with one of the battery components<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A quick fix could be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk/blog\/breakdown\/how-to-jump-start-a-car\/\">jump start<\/a>. This is when your car battery receives a booster charge from a secondary battery on another vehicle. You may also get it going with a bump start, which is when you get someone to give you a push before engaging a low gear to turn the engine over. Note that both these fixes are short term measures; you should investigate the underlying cause and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/car\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-car-battery-maintenance\/\">regularly maintain the car battery<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/campervan\/car-health-checks-to-take-during-lockdown\/\">check the battery <\/a>connections are tight and check the terminals for corrosion as these might have caused the issue in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-starter-motor-fault\">2. Starter motor fault<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The starter motor is connected to the car\u2019s battery and sets the engine in motion when you start the ignition \u2013 or it should do. If you have a problem with the starter motor, your car won\u2019t start. You may hear a loud click when you turn your car\u2019s ignition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A symptom of a faulty starter motor might be a loud click when you turn the key in the ignition and that\u2019s a signal you will need a mechanic to check it, along with the car\u2019s electrical system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-fuel-supply-problems\">3. Fuel supply problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are out of fuel, your car won\u2019t start. Other fuel supply problems include faults with the fuel pump and electrical or mechanical issues with the fuel system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could also have problems if you have filled up with the wrong fuel and your tank will then have to be drained, cleaned and the correct fuel added. It\u2019s easier to fill up with the wrong fuel than you would think \u2013 every day, 400 people in the UK use the wrong fuel \u2013 so it\u2019s worth considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/extra-benefits\/\">misfuelling insurance<\/a> from as little as \u00a313.99 a year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-electrical-or-wiring-problems\">4. Electrical or wiring problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These include problems with the fuse box, loose battery cables or malfunctions in the car\u2019s computer management system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your car has sat idle for an extended period, check beneath the bonnet before you start it up as rodents can nest within it, gnaw through cables and cause electrical problems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-mechanical-problems\">5. Mechanical problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mechanical problems that can prevent your car from starting are the crankshaft or the timing belt. This could be the problem if the engine won\u2019t turn over or starts and stalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sterling-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Images-1-bonnet-up-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"car\" class=\"wp-image-31537\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-faulty-immobilisers-nbsp\">6. Faulty immobilisers&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your car\u2019s security system can stop you from starting the car if it doesn\u2019t recognise your key. This might happen if the battery in your key fob is low.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that\u2019s the case, try holding the fob against the start button or use a spare key. If that doesn\u2019t work, you might need to get a new key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-alternator-problems\">7. Alternator problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The alternator supplies electricity to the lights, radio, heating and other electrical equipment and re-charges the car battery. If your alternator, its wiring, or the alternator belt are faulty it can prevent your car from starting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-the-plugs-have-lost-their-spark\">8. The plugs have lost their spark<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your car will have difficulty starting if you have a flooded petrol engine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This happens when the engine is switched off too soon after being started from cold. Unburned fuel which entered the engine remains there and wets the spark plugs, making the car harder to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When this happens, you may hear a whirring sound coming from the engine compartment when you try to start the car. You may also detect a strong smell of petrol or the car may start only to cut out again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oily or corroded spark plugs may make the car difficult to start.
