They take up very little space but can get you out of trouble if your battery does fail. This blog explains how to use jump leads effectively and safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before you jump start a car: make sure you\u2019re safe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you try to jump start a car, remember that batteries produce flammable gases and an electrical charge, so you should follow these steps to stay safe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure you are in a safe place so you can get under the bonnet without harming yourself or others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure you have no dangling clothing, such as a tie or scarf, as they can catch in the engine\u2019s moving parts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t smoke or allow naked flames anywhere near the engine compartment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t try to jump start a battery that is damaged or leaking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never use damaged jump leads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switch off both car engines and stop using the jump leads if they get hot or begin to smoke<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t let any metal objects touch the car batteries \u2013 these could cause a spark and possibly make the battery explode. That includes rings, necklaces, watch straps, hand tools, clips, stray wires, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t remove the jump leads while the engines are running as this can cause serious damage to the cars\u2019 electronics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sterling-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2022\/05\/ST023-How-to-jump-start-your-car-image--1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"jump lead\" class=\"wp-image-33663\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-jump-starting-a-car-with-jump-leads\">Jump-starting a car with jump leads<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Find someone with a car who can help<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need to find someone who has a fully charged battery and is willing to give your car a boost. Hybrids and electric cars are not suitable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Put the cars in position&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Manoeuvre the booster car so that both batteries are within easy reach of each other. Depending on the position of each car\u2019s batteries, they may need to be very close, but they must not touch each other.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, apply the handbrakes of both cars and switch off the ignitions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-clip-the-jump-leads-in-place\">3. Clip the jump leads in place<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-clip-the-red-jump-lead-to-the-working-battery-s-positive-terminal-and-clip-the-other-end-to-the-flat-battery-s-positive-terminal\">Clip the red jump lead to the working battery\u2019s positive (+) terminal and clip the other end to the flat battery\u2019s positive (+) terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, clip the black jump lead to the working battery\u2019s negative (-) terminal and clip the other end to an earthing point on the engine block.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Start the booster car<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Start the booster car and let it idle for a couple of minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-turn-on-the-engine-of-the-car-with-a-flat-battery\">5. Turn on the engine of the car with a flat battery<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-start-the-car-with-the-flat-battery-letting-both-cars-idle-for-a-few-minutes-it-may-take-a-couple-of-attempts-for-the-car-to-jump-start\">Start the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterling-insurance.co.uk\/blog\/breakdown\/flat-car-battery\/\">car with the flat battery<\/a>, letting both cars idle for a few minutes. It may take a couple of attempts for the car to jump start.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-wait-for-about-ten-minutes\">6. Wait for about ten minutes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-leave-both-cars-idle-at-a-fast-tick-over-for-about-10-minutes\">Leave both cars idle at a fast tick over for about 10 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-turn-off-both-engines-and-disconnect-the-jump-leads\">7. Turn off both engines and disconnect the jump leads<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, turn off both engines and disconnect the jump leads in the reverse order to the way they were connected, removing the black lead from your car first and finishing with the red lead from the booster car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-restart-your-car\">8. Restart your car<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-finally-restart-your-car-and-drive-it-normally-for-around-30-minutes-to-enable-the-battery-to-fully-recharge\">Finally, restart your car and drive it normally for around 30 minutes to enable the battery to fully recharge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-jump-starting-a-car-with-a-battery-booster-pack\">Jump-starting a car with a battery booster pack<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a car battery booster pack, you won\u2019t need anyone else\u2019s help to boost your failed battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you are using a booster pack, you will need to follow the same safety advice for getting a jump start from another vehicle. The procedure using a booster pack is very similar to using a booster car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sterling-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2022\/05\/ST023-How-to-jump-start-your-car-image-2--1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"jump lead\" class=\"wp-image-33662\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-make-sure-the-pack-is-fully-charged\">1. Make sure the pack is fully charged<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-before-you-start-make-sure-the-pack-is-charged-fully-and-position-it-somewhere-stable-and-close-to-the-failed-battery-but-don-t-sit-it-on-the-engine-as-it-might-fall-off-when-the-engine-starts-and-vibrates\">Before you start, make sure the pack is charged fully and position it somewhere stable and close to the failed battery. But don\u2019t sit it on the engine as it might fall off when the engine starts and vibrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-clip-the-leads-in-place\">2. Clip the leads in place<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-clip-the-red-positive-jump-lead-from-the-battery-pack-to-the-positive-terminal-of-the-car-battery\">Clip the red positive (+) jump lead from the battery pack to the positive (+) terminal of the car battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-next-clip-the-black-negative-jump-lead-to-an-earthing-point-on-your-car\">Next, clip the black negative (-) jump lead to an earthing point on your car.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Turn the booster on<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Check the battery pack\u2019s connecting clips are secure, then switch the booster on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-restart-your-car\">5. Restart your car<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-restart-your-car-letting-the-engine-idle-at-a-fast-tick-over-for-about-five-minutes-after-you-have-jump-started-it\">Restart your car, letting the engine idle at a fast tick over for about five minutes after you have jump started it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Switch off the boosted pack<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Turn off the pack and allow the engine to run for a further 5 to 10 minutes so the battery can recharge itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-turn-off-the-engine-and-remove-the-leads\">7. Turn off the engine and remove the leads<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-switch-off-the-engine-and-remove-the-jump-leads-in-the-reverse-order-first-disconnecting-the-black-lead-then-the-red-lead\">Switch off the engine and remove the jump leads in the reverse order, first disconnecting the black lead, then the red lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-restart-your-car-0\">8. Restart your car<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-turn-the-keys-in-the-ignition-and-drive-the-car-normally-for-around-30-minutes-to-enable-the-battery-to-fully-recharge\">Turn the keys in the ignition and drive the car normally for around 30 minutes to enable the battery to fully recharge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9.
